The Pinker Tones hasn't ever disguised its intent to just have fun. And the duo have, album after album, keeping resolutely to life's bright surface with the help of video-game samples and Gary Numan pop, minus the weirdness. But even so, something wistful and uncharacteristic has crept in on Modular, clinging to some melodies (the excellent "Estiarado al Sol") or infecting the lyrics: "Quiero ser/invisible" they sing on "Invisible." And then there's the angular "Un Dia Sin Numeros," with its shrieking guitar and strong rapping. Revolver it ain't, but a bit of gravity does pop good.
