Technicolor Easels (feat. NIKO IS)
Label: Jamla/Javotti Media
Talib Kweli and 9th Wonder revisit their indie roots with a collection of activist anthems and cipher raps. On “Which Side Are You On,” Kweli recites the names of black people killed by police. On “Great Day in the Morning,” he pays tribute to Roc Raida, J Dilla, and Pimp C. 9th Wonder’s beats stick too closely to stock drum patterns, but he switches up his style with a nice medley of synth washes on “Technicolor Easels.” Among the panoply of featured guests, Rapsody shines brightest; her incisive rhymes on sexism in the rap industry on “Life Ahead of Me” are much appreciated.
