Heartland Highway is one of those records that blends modern rock and modern country so thoroughly it's near impossible to tag it one or the other. This makes a lot of sense, considering the album arrives at a time in American pop when post-grunge, Americana, adult alternative and Nashville have all collapsed in on themselves in many respects. Then again, Sister Hazel have always boasted a touch of twang in their sound. But with this album that twang is central to the group's aesthetic.
