A Dancer's Dream: Two Works by Stravinsky
Label: New York Philharmonic
In 2013, the orchestra kept up its reputation for live-event "staged events" with this concept ballet, which spun a narrative by joining two works by Stravinsky ("The Fairy's Kiss" and "Petrushka"). We're missing out on the visuals here, obviously, which is a bit distracting whenever the live audience laughs at some bit of stage business we're not seeing. But the Philharmonic's daring take on the latter ballet is worth savoring anyway. By being less hectically busy than many prior recordings (including the composer's own), it offers a new perspective on one of Stravinsky's most enduring works.
