The Agony of Laffitte
Label: Mardev Records
With opener "Electrocution," ancient grunge poppers Nada Surf manage to resurrect the salad days of indie rock, echoing Big Star, The Byrds and Dwight Twilley all at once in a radio-friendly format the genre could never quite reach itself. From there, the unfortunately tagged, but undeniable, One Hit Wonders (remember "Popular" from 1996?) apply more Byrds-like harmonies and Alex Chilton-style melodies (think "September Gurls") to their signature simple guitar-bass-drums setup. Aside from the fantastic opener, the key tracks here are "Enjoy the Silence" and "You Were So Warm."
