Muzik Fo' Tha Taliban
Label: SMC Recordings
You don't have to belong to a fundamentalist Islamic group to enjoy this disk, but it helps if you're crazy for big beats and bigger boasts. San Francisco's Messy Marv loves quirky electro, and Taliban contains some of the more idiosyncratic productions you're likely to hear from a hip-hop album in 2007. The polyrhythmic "Dot Trigg" sounds like an assault, while "Charger" features super-hot Bay Area producer E-A-Ski. Messy has unmemorable lyrics, but he invests himself fully in every track. Screeching, crying and shouting as the beat demands, Marv sounds like a West Coast Ghostface.
