Determined to regain the platinum card she’d hung onto until 2015’s Piece By Piece. the erstwhile American Idol delivers probably her most r&b album ever, at least in the early Mariah Carey sense – check out the melismatic crescendos and vowel stretching in the electro-rushed “Heat,” gospelized “I Don’t Think About You” and existential title track. “Would You Call That Love” feels even churchier, and “Medicine” belts like turn-of-the-‘90s house pop after kicking off with a Rob Base “It Takes Two” beat. There’s also Michelle Obama-indebted closer “Go High” and the biscuit-and-gravy fed, proudly non-waifish (and Texan) “Whole Lotta Woman” – complete with intermittent rhythmic assistance from Earth, Wind and Fire.
