Walls And Bridges
Label: Emi Catalogue
Separated from Yoko Ono in what became known as his extended "Lost Weekend," Lennon recorded this laid-back, engaging LP with drinking buddies like Harry Nilsson, Nicky Hopkins and Elton John. Believe it or not, Lennon's disco duet with Elton, "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night," was his first No. 1 U.S. pop hit, and it carried the album to the top of the charts. "#9 Dream" is goofy and amazing -- nothing else on the LP quite matches it. That said, "Old Dirt Road" and "Scared" are gorgeous, while "What You Got" and "Steel and Glass" show that Lennon could be freaky and funky with the best of them. This is the most underrated item in his solo catalog.
