Über Hazmat Modine
If Ry Cooder teamed up with a klezmer band and a Tuvan throat singer, you might end up with Hazmat Modine. Formed in New York City by singer/harmonica player Wade Schuman in 2000, the band evolved slowly and didn't release its debut album, Bahamut until 2007. By then, they'd solidified their utter lack of solidity as a musical entity, preferring to collaborate with Tuvan throat singers and anyone else who came along and eschewing any easy categorization. When it works, it's fascinating: archaic folk cultures colliding, doing the jig, collapsing on each other and getting up again -- with deep blues and New Orleans jazz pulsing beneath. When it doesn't work, it feels like a parody of all that is music.
