Hall & Oates' first two albums were cut with legendary producer Arif Mardin. When their second set failed to be the hit it deserved to be, they teamed up with Todd Rundgren for this more rock-centric outing. The songwriting is creative and fresh and the performances are tight, but Rundgren too often makes the eccentric duo sound more like a standard rock band. Still, the weirder things get, the better: "'70s Scenario" and "Screaming Through December" are true originals -- soft prog-rock ballads that defined the era without really sounding like anything else from that time.
