Über Gulzar

Probably Hindi cinema's greatest lyricist of the 20th century, Gulzar has also written and directed a number of films and published several books of poetry and children's stories. Born in what is now Pakistan, Gulzar migrated to Delhi after partition. His lyrics for Bimal Roy's Bandini in 1963 launched his career, and less than a decade later he made his first film, Mere Apni (1971). During a slow decade spanning the mid-1980s to the '90s, Gulzar had one major success with the television serial Mirza Ghalib about the poet of the same name. He came back in 1996 with the documentary Maachis, which led to work with the new crop of music directors, including Anu Malik and A.R. Rahman. Gulzar has provided sensitive lyrics for a new generation of films including Dil Se, Ashoka, Pinjar and Chupke Se.
