How much is Kevin Eubanks digging his retirement from blah-jazz duties on The Tonight Show? From the first notes of "The Watcher," a tune he brings to bassist Dave Holland's fusion group, you'll sense the guitarist's newfound abandon, as he employs filthier, more distorted phrasing than one can use beside Jay Leno. That he's trading licks with titans like Holland (whose "The Empty Chair" has the blues) and keyboard wizard Craig Taborn (who goes acoustic on his own wild, unmissable "Spirals") makes this an ideal forum for Eubanks to get back to his creative roots. More from this band, please!
